About Me.
PgCAP Open, BEd(PrimSpEd) Flin, BDisSt Flin, MADisSt MQ
With over 30 years of diverse experience in education and accessibility services, I am a passionate advocate for the Deaf community. Now, as the Manager, Language Services for Expression Australia—a role that feels like a full-circle return to my roots in the UK—I am excited to blend my deep expertise and leadership to advance language services that empower and connect the Deaf community. This position is a dream come true, supported by my three degrees, including a Master’s completed in Australia, and four diplomas earned in the UK, along with leadership training.
As a qualified NAATI Translator (Auslan/English) and a profoundly Deaf individual, I bring lived experience as a Deaf, gay man and Auslan user. My career has been dedicated to empowering Deaf individuals through education, professional development, and ensuring access to communication.
My professional journey spans both the UK and Australia, where I’ve held key leadership and consultancy roles. Recently, I transitioned into the roles of Media Manager for Communication eXtra and Auslan Consultant for Auslan Stage Left, where I analyse and provide feedback to interpreters working in theatre and live performances.
In my work with Writers SA, I focused on developing programs for Deaf adults in writing and the creative arts, including Auslan-based performances. I’ve also provided business consultancy to Deaf Aboriginal Services, helping to create their website to enhance communication accessibility for Indigenous Deaf communities.
“Bridging worlds with language, I empower voices in silence, celebrate diversity in connection, and inspire authenticity in every expression.” Stuart Anderson, November 2024
As the former Director of Signamic, I led a team of 30 staff, developing workshops, courses, and professional development for the Deaf community. I’m proud to have been part of developing the UK’s first Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Translation (English/Auslan) while working for Signature, an awarding body responsible for 700 registered centres. Additionally, I served as a national quality assurer for Signature and trained others to become qualified quality assurers. I continue to engage in community-based initiatives, such as the Deaf Queer Festival, and organise social gatherings for MAD Victoria, fostering connections among middle-aged Deaf gay men.
“Through every word spoken and sign shared, I am dedicated to breaking barriers, creating spaces of belonging, and amplifying the stories that the world deserves to hear. My work is more than language; it’s a bridge to understanding, an invitation to connect, and a celebration of voices that have long awaited their moment.” Stuart Anderson, November 2024
I hold a Master of Disability Studies (Deaf/Hard of Hearing) from Macquarie University, along with a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Disability Studies from Flinders University. In addition to my numerous UK qualifications, which establish me as an expert with experience in both the UK and Australia, my work is deeply driven by inclusivity, social justice, and fostering accessible communication for all.
Originally from Scotland, I’ve called Australia home since 2015, where I live with my husband of 24 years and our two cats.
